Sesame Street Special Explores Childhood Hunger
Today, one in four children faces food insecurity, meaning that they have uncertain or limited access to affordable, nutritious food. Even if your child doesn’t face this uncertainty, chances are, her playground friend or his classmate does.
A new Sesame Street special – "Growing Hope Against Hunger" – raises awareness about the issue of hunger in the United States. Watch online
It also provides simple, empowering strategies to families who aren't sure where their next meal will come from – and to others who want to help.
Featuring Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams Paisley, along with Sesame Street favorites like Elmo, "Growing Hope Against Hunger" celebrates the importance of community as everyone works to help one another.
In this one-hour special, you and your children will meet Lily, a new puppet friend on Sesame Street whose family finds strength in empathy - helping those who face the same ongoing hunger struggle that they do.
You will also hear from other children from around the nation as they share their individual stories and perspectives on food insecurity. These documentary pieces not only illuminate the impact of hunger on families, but also help to reduce the stigma surrounding the issue of hunger, providing strategies to facilitate your discussion with your family regarding this issue.
As your family journeys with Elmo and his fellow puppet friends, volunteering and collecting food at a food drive and community garden, your children will learn that they, too, can make a difference. After watching the television special, they can start by making a friend, planting a seed or participating in a family activity.
Parents and kids can watch the program online and find additional resources at the Sesame Street website.
