Sine Die
The leaders of the Oregon House and Senate dropped their gavels Thursday and uttered the Latin phrase "sine die," which means "without a day," signaling the end of the 2011 legislative session. Think Out Loud has broadcast live from the press room at the Capitol twice a month throughout the session. We've followed a number of issues that dominated the 2011 legislature, from budget wrangling and redistricting to higher education and health care changes.
This session was historic in more than one way. The House was split evenly, with 30 Democrats and 30 Republicans. Oregon representatives made the unprecedented decision to elect co-speakers, one from each side of the aisle. It's also the first session since Oregonians passed a ballot measure instituting annual sessions for the state legislature. That measure imposed a strict deadline for adjournment, which lawmakers barely met.
